Casa Finch

Casa Finch sits by itself on a hilltop above Valle de Guadalupe, the wine region inland from Ensenada that produces roughly seventy percent of Mexico's wine. The house was built by its owner as a private home, walled in glass on every side, with an infinity pool that runs to the edge of the hill and vineyards filling the view in every direction. There are no other houses close enough to see.

It rents as a whole house, sleeping eight across four bedrooms, and is looked after day to day by a concierge based in Baja who can arrange a chef, a spa visit, a driver for the wineries, or a table at a restaurant that would otherwise be full. Booking runs through Airbnb; the property's own site carries the fuller picture and the direct link.

The space

The house is built around one long, open great room — kitchen, dining and living folded into a single space under a timber ceiling, with glass walls on both sides and a fireplace for when the desert cools at night. The kitchen is fully equipped for a group cooking for itself, with a dining table that seats eight; there is a record player, a dedicated workspace and fast Wi-Fi for anyone who needs it.

Four bedrooms sleep eight across four beds: a primary suite with a king bed and its own wall of glass, a queen room, and two further bedrooms finished in warm wood with blackout curtains and reading lamps. The three bathrooms are finished in stone, with round mirrors, rain showers and one black soaking tub. Self check-in works by keypad, so arrival doesn't depend on anyone meeting you at the door.

The setting

Valle de Guadalupe holds more than two hundred wineries across a dry, golden valley about twenty kilometres from the Pacific, in the municipality of Ensenada. Casa Finch sits above most of it, close enough to reach on a short drive and high enough to see a good part of the valley from the pool. Casa de Piedra, Villa Montefiori and Decantos Vinícola are among the larger, better-known names nearby; Cava Maciel and Rondo del Valle offer a quieter, more personal tasting.

The valley's food scene has grown up alongside the wine. Deckman's en El Mogor helped start the farm-to-table style the region is now known for; Finca Altozano and Animalón, both from chef Javier Plascencia, cook over open wood fires; Corazón de Tierra and the Michelin-starred Fauna both draw diners from well outside the valley. Reservations are worth making ahead, especially in season.

Getting there takes about two hours from San Diego, crossing the border at San Ysidro and following the coast highway south, or a roughly ninety-minute drive from Tijuana's airport along the Ruta del Vino. Ensenada and the Pacific coast are twenty minutes down the hill. Late July and August bring the Fiestas de la Vendimia, harvest events that have run in the valley for more than thirty-five years; spring and autumn are quieter and greener, and winter is cool and clear, with the house's fireplace doing the work.

Who it suits

This is a house for a group that wants a private base for touring the valley, not a walkable town stay — the nearest neighbours are out of sight, and a car or an arranged driver is the way in and out. It works well for families or friends splitting a week around wine tastings and long dinners, with enough bedrooms and bathrooms that nobody is squeezed. It suits people happy to cook for themselves some nights and let the concierge arrange a chef on others. It is not built for parties or events, and the owners keep it that way on purpose — this is a private home first, rented out to only a limited number of guests each year.
