Home/Stays/Wait and Sea

A three-bedroom, second-row beach house in North Myrtle Beach that sleeps ten, three blocks from Main Street and a short walk from the sand.

  • Second row from the Atlantic, one quiet street from the beach and three blocks from Main Street
  • Three bedrooms and two bathrooms sleeping up to ten, with two covered porches and an open sun deck
  • Rated 5.0 across seven stays on Airbnb
  • Main Street's shag clubs on foot; Cherry Grove Pier, Barefoot Landing and four championship golf courses a short drive away

Wait and Sea sits one row back from the ocean in North Myrtle Beach's Ocean Drive section, three blocks from Main Street on a quiet residential street. The house is upfront about the trade: this is a second-row cottage, not an oceanfront tower, and it says so rather than dressing up the address.

It is the second floor of a classic double-porch beach house, freshened up in seafoam and white, with three bedrooms and two bathrooms sleeping up to ten guests. A local family runs it directly rather than handing it to a management company, and early guests have rated it 5.0 across seven stays on Airbnb.

The space

Inside, the kitchen, dining area and living room share one open, bright space finished in soft seafoam green, aqua stripes and crisp white, with luxury-vinyl flooring underfoot that holds up to sandy feet. The kitchen runs on granite counters and a centre island with breakfast-bar seating, a full-size fridge, stove, microwave and coffee maker, enough to cook for a full house. Next door, the living room has teal sofas, coastal art, plantation shutters and a smart TV under a broad ceiling fan.

Three bedrooms and two full bathrooms sleep up to ten guests, with linens and towels provided. Outside, two covered porches, one on each level, are built for rocking chairs and slow mornings, and above them an open sun deck holds lounge chairs and a gas grill. Central air conditioning, free WiFi and off-street parking round out the practical side of the house.

The setting

Wait and Sea sits in the Ocean Drive section of North Myrtle Beach, which calls itself the birthplace of the Carolina Shag, South Carolina's state dance. Main Street is three blocks away on foot, where the OD Pavilion keeps one of the coast's last open-air dance floors and shag clubs such as Fat Harold's, Duck's and the Spanish Galleon share the block with arcades, ice cream counters and pancake houses.

The beach is one quiet street away, wide, lifeguarded in summer and backed by dune grass. North along the coast, the rebuilt Cherry Grove Pier draws anglers and early risers. About ten minutes by car is Barefoot Landing, a waterfront collection of shops and restaurants with House of Blues, Alligator Adventure and a Sunday gospel brunch, and the same drive reaches Barefoot Resort's four championship golf courses, laid out by Greg Norman, Davis Love III, Tom Fazio and Pete Dye. For dinner, it's a walk to Duffy Street Seafood, Flynn's Irish Tavern or the Golden Griddle, or a short drive to LuLu's for Southern coastal food and live music.

Who it suits

This is a house for a full group rather than a couple's weekend: a family reunion, a golf trip, a girls' week or several generations under one roof. The hosts are direct about what it is and isn't — a second-row cottage on a quiet residential street, not an oceanfront tower and not a party house. Pets are not allowed. Anyone set on a beachfront high-rise, or a place to host a large event, should look elsewhere; anyone after space, comfort and an easy walk to Main Street will find it does the job without pretending to be something it is not.
