The São Conrado Beach View Villa sits on the hillside above one of the only stretches of Rio de Janeiro where houses still meet the sand directly. Behind it rises Pedra da Gávea, the granite dome that marks the western edge of the city's beaches; below, the Atlantic runs unbroken to the horizon.
The house was designed by the Rio firm Bernardes + Jacobsen, built as a glass-walled pavilion inside a gated, guarded condominium. It is let through Art de Vivre, the boutique brokerage that manages it as part of its Rio rental book, and it sleeps up to twelve.
The space
Four suites, each with its own bathroom, run along a single glass-walled pavilion that opens on both sides — to the pool on one, to the hillside on the other. One of the suites carries three additional single beds, which is how the house reaches its full count of twelve; the other three are built for couples or families travelling together. Six bathrooms in total are finished in stone, and at least one is large enough to double as a sitting room.
The living and dining spaces sit under the same pitched glass-and-timber roof, furnished with low built-in seating and hung with contemporary art rather than the usual rental-house prints. The dining table seats the whole party at once, glass on three sides, looking straight out at the garden. The kitchen is built for a full house: two ovens, two refrigerators, a Nespresso machine alongside the filter coffee, and its own water filtration system. A Bluetooth audio system runs through the house, and there is a home cinema besides.
The setting
São Conrado is a strip of Rio that Ipanema and Leblon do not have: a beach with houses right on it in places, the eighteen-hole Gávea Golf & Country Club, and the Pepino landing strip where hang gliders come down after launching from Pedra Bonita. All three sit within a few hundred metres of each other, and the São Conrado metro station on Line 4 is close enough to walk to — six minutes by train to Ipanema, or about 25 minutes by the Linha Amarela to Galeão airport.
This villa sits above that strip rather than on it, high enough for the pool deck to look down over the coastline and the city beyond. It is a quieter, more residential corner of the Zona Sul than its neighbours to the east — established local families, golf members, and a long-standing community of European retirees along the beachfront, rather than the restaurant strips of Ipanema. Pedra da Gávea and the forest below it wrap around the property on the land side, which is why the pool and the living pavilion both look straight at the rock rather than at other houses.
Who it suits
This is a house for a group that wants to be under one roof rather than spread across hotel rooms — four or five couples, a multi-generational family, or friends who don't mind sharing a kitchen table for a week. The scale and the staff make more sense for a full house than a small one; two people alone would find most of it empty. It suits travellers who want Rio's beach and mountain in the same view and don't need to walk to a restaurant strip at night — São Conrado's dining is limited to the Fashion Mall and a handful of beachfront places, not the density of Ipanema.
