Vista Elevador & Mar is one of the four suites Via Avantgarde runs in the Cidade Alta, the historic upper town of Salvador da Bahia, and it is the one built around the view. Its windows look one way to the Lacerda Elevator, the lift tower that links the upper and lower towns, and the other way over the Bay of All Saints. It sleeps two.

The space

The suite is one large room wrapped in windows. A private jacuzzi, available all year, stands on a platform by the glass, placed for the late-afternoon light and the sunset over the bay, which Via Avantgarde calls the hour the jacuzzi earns its keep. The bed faces the same way. The decoration mixes antiques found around Bahia, textiles from local artisans, woven lamps, hanging plants and a slatted ceiling, with a few hard-edged modern lines to keep it from feeling like a museum.

The kitchen is a compact corner with a gas stove, a mini fridge, a microwave, a blender and a drip coffee maker, enough for breakfast and a simple supper. There is air-conditioning and a ceiling fan, a TV, and a projector with a screen for films. Check-in is self-service with a keypad, and parking is available on the premises for a fee.

The setting

From the windows you look down on the squares and colonial buildings of the old centre, and the church towers that frame the sunset. The Pelourinho, the painted heart of the historic centre listed by UNESCO, is a short walk, and the Lacerda Elevator takes you down to the Mercado Modelo and the port in under a minute. The neighbourhood is lively and musical, especially at weekends, and the streets are steep and cobbled.

Getting there is straightforward. Salvador airport is on the far side of the city, roughly 30 kilometres from the historic centre, and the drive in can take well over half an hour in traffic. Guests who book direct can ask Via Avantgarde to include a private transfer, which saves hunting for the door among the cobbled lanes with luggage. Once here, the old town is best on foot, with a taxi or ride-hail for the beaches further out along the coast.

Who it suits

Couples, above all, and anyone marking an occasion: the listing offers a romance set-up on request, and the sunset from the jacuzzi does most of the work on its own. It suits travellers who want the view and the old town more than space; it is one room for two, without a beach or a pool.

Good to know

One room with one bed and a bathroom; sleeps two. Private jacuzzi, compact kitchen, air-conditioning, a projector and screen, self check-in with a keypad, and paid parking on the premises. A romance set-up can be requested. Booked direct with Via Avantgarde.
