The Buck Island Overlook is a five-bedroom, three-bath house in the hills of Hope and Carton Hill, on the East End of St. Croix, and the name is literal. From the upper deck the land falls away through the trees to the sea, and Buck Island, the reef national monument off the north-east coast, sits in the middle of the view. The house is painted turquoise, with a white roof and decks that step down the hillside. It sleeps twelve.

The space
The main level has a custom wood kitchen with a lot of cabinetry, large counters, an island with bar seating and modern appliances, with a dining area beside it. It opens into a living room with direct access to the pool deck. A second living area gives the group a quieter place to retreat to, and a second kitchen adds a fridge, counter, sink and prep space, which matters when you are cooking for twelve. There is also an office.

The five bedrooms are decorated in strong colours, and the house sleeps twelve using five beds and two futons or sleeper sofas, so it suits a large family or two families together more than six couples. Ceiling fans run through the house and out onto the decks.

The setting
The upper deck is the heart of the property. It holds the private pool, loungers, rocking chairs and outdoor tables, all facing Buck Island. Below it, a covered lower deck has a second dining table, lounge seating and a hammock, out of the sun.

The East End is the quiet end of the island, known for its coastline and scenic drives. Teague Bay and Cramer's Park are the nearby beaches, Point Udall, the easternmost point of the United States, is the place for sunrise, and the hike down to Jack and Isaac Bays is close. Duggan's Reef is a local dinner spot, and Christiansted, with the boardwalk and the boats out to Buck Island itself, is a drive west. The listing is plain about the roads: the house sits high in a residential area, East End attractions are spread out, a rental car is strongly recommended, and some roads are narrow, winding or steep, so take care after dark. St. Croix drives on the left.
Who it suits
A big family, a reunion, or two families sharing a week, who want room to spread out and a view to gather around. Two kitchens and two living areas help a large group run on different clocks. It suits people who are happy to drive to the beach and come back to the deck. With three bathrooms for twelve, and two of the beds being sofa beds, it is less suited to a group of couples who each want their own en-suite room.
Good to know
Five bedrooms and three baths; sleeps twelve across five beds and two futons or sleeper sofas. Guests have the living areas, all five bedrooms, both kitchens, the office, the private pool, the upper deck, the covered lower deck and the driveway. The listing marks the house suitable for children and infants. A rental car is strongly recommended. The villa is managed and booked by SP Vacations (Sterling Point Real Estate) in St. Croix.
