Dragonfly Villa is a three-bedroom, four-bath house on a gated property high in the hills of St. Croix's East End. It has the sea on both sides, so the living room, the bedrooms and all four of its patios look out over the hills to the water. The pool is a saltwater infinity pool with a blue dragonfly set into the tiles on its floor, which is where the name comes from. It sleeps eight.

The space
The main room is open-plan under a high beamed ceiling, with terracotta floors, a round dining table and windows on every side. The kitchen beside it is the house's other strength. The listing itemises it: All-Clad and cast-iron pans, a Vitamix blender, a Dutch oven, a pizza stone, an Instant Pot and a waffle maker, plus the mixing bowls, zesters and muffin pans that rental kitchens tend to lack. A guest who had many meals in called it a "beautiful kitchen with all the amenities needed."

Each of the three bedrooms has its own bathroom, and there is a fourth bath besides. The showers are large and open, tiled in warm stone colours. One guest's highlight was the sunrise from the upstairs suite.

The setting
Outside, the infinity pool runs along the edge of a covered terrace, with a dining table under cover beside it and a large barbecue for cooking out. The four patios give you a choice of sun or shade at any hour. "Best views in STX," wrote a December guest who visits the island several times a year. The house runs on solar power with battery backup.

The East End is the quiet, drier end of the island. Point Udall, the easternmost point of the United States, the hike down to Jack and Isaac Bays, and Cramer's Park are all within a short drive, and Christiansted is farther west. You will want a car, and St. Croix drives on the left.
Who it suits
Couples who want privacy and a view, a family of five or six, or a small group who like to cook. The listing includes a travel crib and children's books for families with small children, and allows long stays. It is a hillside house, not a beach house; the beaches are a drive away, and the reward is the outlook from the terraces.
