Caribbean Blue Hideaway is a one-bedroom, one-bathroom condo on the third floor of the Long Reef complex on St. Croix, in the Christiansted area. It is a corner unit, updated throughout, and its best feature is the view: out over the Caribbean to Buck Island, the small uninhabited island off the north-east coast with the underwater trail. It sleeps two.

The space
The condo has new tile floors, updated doors, and a stone accent wall with lighting that holds the television in the living room. The living area and the kitchen share one bright room with louvred windows along the outside wall; a round glass table seats four. The kitchen is well equipped for cooking in, with an oven and stove, a microwave, a toaster and a coffee maker. The listing singles out the air-conditioning as powerful, which matters on a top floor in summer.

The bedroom has a king bed under a ceiling fan, with room-darkening shades for anyone who would rather not wake with the sun. There is one bathroom. Outside the front door, a small covered balcony on the walkway has two chairs and a small table, enough for coffee in the morning.

The setting
Long Reef is a low hillside complex of blue-railed buildings set among palms and flowering gardens, with a shared pool and terrace that look out over the hills toward the sea. Coin-operated washers and dryers are on site. The pool and the laundry are shared with other residents and guests. Christiansted, with its restaurants, the boardwalk and the boats to Buck Island, is a short drive away, and the listing recommends a car. St. Croix drives on the left.

Who it suits
Couples and solo travellers who want a tidy, updated base with a sea view, and who will spend their days out on the island. It is a one-bedroom condo in a shared complex, not a private house, and it is on the third floor, so travellers with heavy luggage or limited mobility should ask SP Vacations about access before booking.
It also works well as a base for a first visit to the island. Buck Island, the reason the view matters, is a short boat trip from Christiansted, and the tour boats leave from the waterfront in town. Frederiksted, the beaches of the west end and the rainforest road are a longer drive, and easy to fit into a day.
