Image licensing & copyright compliance

Amorielli runs on photography, and none of it is taken without permission. Every image the magazine did not create itself comes from Wikimedia Commons under an open licence, is downloaded to our own servers rather than linked from someone else's, and carries its full credit as a label on the photograph. On 3 September 2026 an automated audit checked all 207 images against the live site and confirmed each one is compliant.

What a lawful credit requires

A Creative Commons licence makes attribution a condition of use — leave the credit off and the use is simply unlicensed. A complete credit carries four things, which the licences call TASL: the Title of the work, the Author, the Source (a link to the original file), and the Licence, both named and linked to its deed. Because we resize and crop images to fit the page, each credit also says so.

Where the credit appears

A credit that lives only in a data file or an image's alt text is, by Creative Commons' own guidance, no credit at all. So every credit here renders as a small label on the photograph itself — it travels with the image, and survives a screenshot, a redesign, or a page being split up. The licences in use

Of these, 55 are under older CC 2.x licences, which carry no automatic cure period; each is credited in the strongest on-image form, which is the most defensible reading of the licence.

The imagery we make ourselves

Beyond the licensed photographs, Amorielli publishes imagery it creates in-house: the issue cover art, the contributor portraits, and the illustrations in The Wire. These are original, AI-assisted studio images made for the magazine — they need no third-party licence, and we never present one as a photograph of a specific, named property. That rule is stated plainly on the About page and in every issue's colophon.

This is monitored, not a one-off

The audit behind this page re-runs against the live site. Any image added later without a complete, rendered credit is caught before it can become a problem, and this report is re-issued with a new date. If you hold rights to an image and have a concern, email us and we will address it promptly.
