Buck Island Views is a three-bedroom villa on a hillside east of Christiansted, on St. Croix's north side, built in the island way: white walls, green shutters, green metal roofs and long covered galleries. The name describes the view. From the pool terrace the land drops away through the trees to the sea, with Buck Island out toward the horizon. It sleeps six.

The space
The house is arranged as three separate spaces. The main house has the shared rooms: a bright open living area with vaulted ceilings, warm wood and large windows, and a chef's kitchen that runs into the dining and living areas, so whoever is cooking stays in the conversation. The primary suite is here too, with its own bathroom and easy access to the outdoor spaces.

The other two bedrooms are detached suites, each with a private bathroom, linked to the main house by covered walkways. For two couples, or parents with older children, it means a door of one's own and a short walk under cover to breakfast. In all there are three bedrooms and three and a half baths.

The setting
The pool terrace is the centre of the property: a quarter-circle pool lined with loungers, framed by planting, with a covered patio for meals and the sea in front. Galleries with arched openings run along the house for shade in the middle of the day, and there is a hammock. The listing describes the setting as secluded, and the one guest review so far agrees, describing it as "perched beautifully on a hillside with sweeping ocean views."

Christiansted, with the boardwalk, Fort Christiansvaern and the boats out to Buck Island, is a short drive west, and the north-shore beaches are a short drive in either direction. The listing recommends parking on site and a car is the practical choice; St. Croix drives on the left.
Who it suits
A small family, two couples, or friends who want shared rooms by day and their own quarters at night. "If you're coming to St Croix and have a small family this place is really perfect," wrote a July guest. With a laptop-friendly workspace and long stays allowed, it also suits someone working remotely for a few weeks. It is not on the beach, and getting anywhere means a drive; the trade is privacy and the view.
Good to know
Three bedrooms and three and a half baths; sleeps six. The primary suite is in the main house and the two other bedrooms are detached suites with their own bathrooms.
