Bananaquit Bungalow is a one-bedroom cottage in the hills of Estate Boetzberg on St. Croix, painted pink with a white roof and a white porch, and named after the small yellow-breasted bird that is the official bird of the U.S. Virgin Islands. It is built for one person or a couple who want a quiet place with a view, and it runs entirely off the grid.

The space
Inside, the main room is long and light, with a white beamed ceiling, a living area, a dining table and sliding glass doors that open its length onto the porch. The kitchen is a full one, with a gas range and a sink under a run of windows. The bedroom has a king bed. There is one full bathroom, and a half bathroom that also holds the washer and dryer.

The second room is not a bedroom. It has been set up as a TV room and wellness space, with light exercise equipment and room for a yoga mat. The bedroom and this room have air-conditioning units, and ceiling fans and portable solar-powered fans move the air elsewhere.

The setting
Outside are porches and sitting areas with hammocks, looking out over the dry hills to the sea, and tropical planting around the house. The listing describes the setting as peaceful and the views as wide, and the photographs bear that out. Christiansted, the beaches, golf and restaurants are a short drive away, and a car is the practical way to reach them. St. Croix drives on the left.

The off-grid set-up is the thing to understand before booking. The house is powered only by solar panels and battery storage, with no connection to the utility grid, and its water is rain collected in large cisterns. Guests are asked to conserve: running the air-conditioning hard, doing laundry or using other high-energy appliances, especially after dark or in cloudy weather, can drain the batteries and cause a temporary outage, and power may not return until the sun recharges them. In dry spells, keep showers short and turn off the tap while brushing your teeth.
Who it suits
Solo travellers and couples who like nature, quiet and the idea of living lightly for a week, and who are comfortable keeping an eye on their energy use. The listing is direct that it is not suitable for guests who need continuous low-temperature air-conditioning or guaranteed uninterrupted electricity. If that is you, look at one of the island's grid-connected houses instead.
