The Suite Colonial is the Via Avantgarde apartment for travellers who want a little more room. It is in the Cidade Alta, Salvador's historic upper town, between the Lacerda Elevator and the Hotel Fasano, in a building with a lift, and it sleeps two. Via Avantgarde pitches it as the suite that marries contemporary comfort with the colonial soul of the neighbourhood, and as the one for a trip that mixes work and pleasure.

The space
Unlike the other three suites, this is an apartment with separate rooms. The living room has plum-coloured walls, two dark sofas with patterned cushions, a geometric rug on wooden floors, and a wall of arched niches painted deep blue that hold ceramics and objects. Along the window runs a mint-green bar counter with stools, which serves as the dining table and the desk, with the city below.

The bedroom is quieter, with a lilac cover on the bed, warm lamps and a wall of hanging plants behind the headboard. The kitchen is compact and white-tiled, with a small stove, a mini fridge, a microwave and a drip coffee maker, and shelves of jars and glassware. There is split air-conditioning, books to read, and the bathroom has a shower; this is the one Via Avantgarde suite without a tub.

The setting
The suite sits on the stretch of the upper town between the Lacerda Elevator, which drops to the Mercado Modelo and the port, and the Hotel Fasano on Praça Castro Alves, with restaurants, museums and the bay all within a walk. The Pelourinho, the painted historic centre listed by UNESCO, is a few minutes away. The streets are steep, cobbled and busy, and the city lights from the window are part of the stay.

Getting there is straightforward. Salvador airport is on the far side of the city, roughly 30 kilometres from the historic centre, and the drive in can take well over half an hour in traffic. Guests who book direct can ask Via Avantgarde to include a private transfer, which saves hunting for the door among the cobbled lanes with luggage. Once here, the old town is best on foot, with a taxi or ride-hail for the beaches further out along the coast.
Who it suits
Couples and solo travellers who want a living room as well as a bedroom, and anyone working part of the trip, who will use the window counter as a desk. It is the least theatrical of the four suites and the most like an apartment of your own. Those who want a jacuzzi or a tub in the room should choose the Penthouse Jacuzzi, Vista Elevador & Mar or the Loft Histórico instead.
