Ipanema Beach Linear Penthouse takes up the fifth floor of a residential building set directly on Avenida Vieira Souto, the avenue that runs along Ipanema beach in Rio de Janeiro's Zona Sul. It is let out by Art de Vivre, the brokerage that also manages a handful of other beachfront flats and villas around the city.
The honest reason to stay here is the angle of the thing: the terrace runs the full width of the building, facing the sand straight on, with Arpoador at one end of the view and the twin peaks of Dois Irmãos at the other.
The space
The flat has four bedrooms, two of them en suite, and four bathrooms across 900 square metres, laid out as a family apartment rather than a hotel-style unit. Wood floors run through a living room furnished with a deep sectional sofa and a pair of wing chairs; a separate dining room seats up to eight. The kitchen is fitted for real cooking rather than just breakfast, with a full run of cabinetry and a family-sized table of its own.
A winter garden off the living room opens onto the wraparound terrace, and the carved four-poster bed in the master suite sits opposite doors that lead onto that same terrace. A housekeeper based in the annex handles daily cleaning and upkeep through the stay.
The setting
The building sits on the beach side of Ipanema, within a few hundred metres of Posto 9, the lifeguard post that marks the neighbourhood's main stretch of sand, and of Garota de Ipanema, the restaurant that gave "The Girl from Ipanema" its name. Rua Garcia d'Ávila, the neighbourhood's shopping street, is a short walk inland, and the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, Rio's lagoon and its running and cycling path, is about seven hundred metres from the door.
Arpoador, the rock outcrop at the far end of the beach, is a walk away and the usual spot to watch the sun go down over the water. The nearest metro station is General Osório, on Line 1, which reaches Centro in around eighteen minutes; Rio's international airport is roughly half an hour away by the Linha Amarela expressway.
Who it suits
It suits a family travelling together rather than a group of friends splitting a flat: the building's own rules only admit relatives sharing the apartment, and the dining room is set up for a family of up to eight rather than a crowd. Anyone who wants a working kitchen and a quiet building over a party atmosphere will find this closer to a second home than a hotel room.
