Home/Stays/Loft Histórico

A small, theatrical loft a few metres from the Lacerda Elevator: emerald walls, gilt-framed paintings, a canopy bed in gold curtains and a freestanding tub in the room.

  • A few metres from the Lacerda Elevator
  • Canopy bed hung with gold curtains
  • Freestanding tub in the room
  • Kitchen with a breakfast bar
  • Original floors and architectural detail

The Loft Histórico is the smallest and most theatrical of the four Via Avantgarde suites in Salvador's Cidade Alta, the historic upper town. It sits a few metres from the Lacerda Elevator, the lift tower between the upper and lower towns, and it is made for two. Via Avantgarde describes it as an intimate retreat where every detail, from the original floors to the furniture, tells a piece of Salvador's story.

The space

The loft is one room with a great deal going on in it. The walls are deep emerald and pale stone, gold curtains hang from a canopy around the bed and at the windows, and large gilt-framed paintings fill the walls above the bed and the kitchen. A freestanding white tub stands in the room itself, between the bed and the window, which is the loft's signature and its invitation to stay in for an evening.

The kitchen runs along one wall with a marble-topped breakfast bar and three stools, open shelves and pendant lamps. There is air-conditioning, a TV, Wi-Fi, hot water, an iron and a hair dryer. A small bathroom in blush pink sits off the main room.

The setting

Step outside and you are in the middle of the old city. The Lacerda Elevator drops to the Mercado Modelo, the port and the boats across the Bay of All Saints; uphill, the Pelourinho, the painted heart of the historic centre listed by UNESCO, is a short walk of churches, music and restaurants. The Cidade Alta is meant to be walked, though the streets are steep and cobbled, and the evenings are lively, at weekends especially.

Getting there is straightforward. Salvador airport is on the far side of the city, roughly 30 kilometres from the historic centre, and the drive in can take well over half an hour in traffic. Guests who book direct can ask Via Avantgarde to include a private transfer, which saves hunting for the door among the cobbled lanes with luggage. Once here, the old town is best on foot, with a taxi or ride-hail for the beaches further out along the coast.

Who it suits

Couples on a romantic trip who want a room with a strong personality and the old town on the doorstep. It is not for anyone who wants space, minimal decoration or a big view; it is a small loft whose pleasure is its interior. Travellers who want the bay from the window should look at Via Avantgarde's Vista Elevador & Mar suite instead, and those who need a workspace at the Penthouse Jacuzzi.
