The Winter Issue

A magazine of great places to stay begins in the snow.

From the editors

This is the first issue of Amorielli, and it seemed right to begin where the idea of the season began. St. Moritz has been selling winter to travellers for more than a century, and it still knows how. But behind the famous name is a whole valley — the Engadin — that most people never slow down to see.

We started this magazine for one reason: to answer, plainly and carefully, the only question that really shapes a trip — where should you stay, and when should you go. No star ratings, no listings, no brochure language. Just the honest version, place by place. Thank you for reading the first one.

The contents

  1. On the cover

Where to Stay in St. Moritz: Villages, Hotels, When to Go

St. Moritz is really two towns and a valley of villages. Here is how to choose between the Dorf on the hill and the Bad by the lake, which hotels suit which trip, and when the snow and the crowds line up.

    St. Moritz
  2. The Room

The tower rooms at Badrutt's Palace

The grande dame above the frozen lake is where the modern winter holiday was more or less invented. The lake-facing rooms are the ones people mean when they say they stayed here.

  3. The Table

    Lunch on Corviglia

Half the point of skiing above St. Moritz is stopping for a long lunch on the mountain. The sun terraces at altitude are an institution in their own right.

  4. The Arrival

In over the pass, by train

You can fly to Zurich and drive, but the Rhaetian Railway's climb into the Engadin is a reason to come in the first place. Sit on the right and don't rush it.
