The Warm-Winter Issue

When February gets long, a courtyard and some sun.

From the editors

February is the month the northern winter stops being charming. This issue goes to Marrakech, which is only a short flight from grey Europe and yet feels like a different climate entirely — a city built around courtyards, precisely because the point is to sit in the sun.

The riad is the idea at the centre of it: a plain door on a narrow lane, and a green, quiet world behind it. We spend most of the issue on how to pick one, and how to read the medina so it feels like a pleasure rather than a test.

The contents

  1. On the cover

Where to Stay in Marrakech: Riads, Neighborhoods, and When to Go

A staff guide to choosing where to base in Marrakech: medina riads, modern Gueliz and Hivernage, or a Palmeraie villa, plus when to go, the airport, and what to do.

    Read the guide

  2. The Room

    The riad, decoded

A converted courtyard house is the classic Marrakech stay. The trade-off is location versus calm: deep in the medina is atmospheric but a walk from everything; near a gate is easier to reach by car.

  3. The Table

    Medina, then Guéliz

Eat traditionally inside the walls, but know that the new town, Guéliz, is where you go when you want a change of pace and a glass of wine.

  4. The Detour

    The Atlas and the Agafay

An hour out, the High Atlas villages and the stony Agafay 'desert' give you a day of mountains or dunes and a different quiet to come back from.
