A converted courtyard house is the classic Marrakech stay, but the choice of where it sits in the city dictates the rhythm of a trip. The old town, or medina, is a UNESCO-listed warren of lanes around Jemaa el-Fnaa. Staying here almost always means a riad, a house turned inward around a central patio open to the sky. This design held privacy and cool air in the close heat. From the lane outside, a riad can look like a plain wall and a single door. Inside, it opens up to a garden, usually with a fountain and citrus trees. The trade-off is clear: deep in the medina is atmospheric, with souks and the main square steps away, but no car reaches your door. Near a gate, or in the modern city areas like Gueliz and Hivernage, arrival is easier, but the old city is a taxi ride away.

The word riad comes from the Arabic for garden, and the garden is indeed the point. Rooms wrap around that central courtyard, often with a small plunge pool for cooling off, not for laps. Most riads are small, with a handful of rooms, creating an intimate feel where service is personal. This intimacy comes with a catch: there is no lobby, no gym, and often no elevator. The specific location within the medina drives much of the experience, and often the price. A riad five minutes’ walk from Jemaa el-Fnaa is a different proposition from one twenty-five minutes deep in the winding lanes, however similar their photos appear. Checking the walking time, not just the neighbourhood name, is essential.

Beyond location, a few specific details separate a comfortable riad stay from a frustrating one. The rooftop terrace is where the best hours happen in the medina: breakfast as the city wakes, mint tea at dusk, dinner under the sky. Compare terraces closely, as they are a key part of the experience. Wi-Fi can be patchy; thick old walls block signals, so if you need a dependable connection, ask before booking. Critically, confirm the arrival process. Since cars cannot reach most riad doors, a good one sends someone to meet at the nearest vehicle drop-off point, then walks into the riad. This is a normal part of a medina stay, but it needs arranging in advance.

The timing of a visit also shapes the experience. Spring and fall, from March through May and September through November, are the busier and pricier months for their warm days and cool evenings. Winter brings mild, pleasant days but cold nights; riad courtyards hold the chill, so pack a warm layer for evenings. Summer is genuinely hot, with afternoons often climbing past 38°C, requiring a slower pace and early morning excursions. When booking, always confirm the specific walking time from the nearest car access point to the riad’s door, and ensure staff will meet you there. This single detail smooths your arrival and sets the tone for your stay.
