March is the tail of the cool season in Rajasthan, the last comfortable weeks before the heat arrives. We spent them in Udaipur, the lake city, where several of the old royal palaces are now hotels you can book a room in — including one that sits on its own island in the middle of the water.
It is an easy place to be sold a fantasy, so we tried to be useful instead: which palace is worth it, where the atmospheric old city meets the lake, and how to see the place respectfully, as the living city it is rather than a set.

The Room
On the island at the Taj Lake Palace
Reached only by boat, the white palace on Lake Pichola is the picture everyone has seen. The Oberoi Udaivilas on the shore is the quieter, more spacious alternative.

The Table
Dinner above the water
The old-city rooftops line up at dusk for the same reason: the City Palace and the lake go gold, then floodlit. Book a table that faces the water.

The Detour
Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur
A long day west takes in a vast hill fort and one of the most intricate marble temples in India — a good counterweight to the lakes.
