The Stay Magazine Vol. 1 · No. 07 · July 2025Vol 1 · 07
In July, Santorini is the most crowded beautiful place in Europe, and pretending otherwise helps no one. This issue is the honest version: the caldera rim really is extraordinary, and it really is packed at sunset. We tell you which villages hold onto some calm, and what you pay — in money and in crowds — to wake up over that view.
We also spend time on the island most visitors skip: the flatter east coast, the black-sand beaches, and a surprisingly good wine country that empties out by mid-afternoon.

The Room
Oia, Imerovigli, or off the rim
A cave house on the caldera is the fantasy and the price. Imerovigli is quieter than Oia; staying off the rim entirely costs far less and trades the view for sleep.
-
The Detour
The east coast and the vines
Santorini's volcanic wines and its quieter beaches sit on the far side of the island, away from the photographed cliffs. A good half-day of relief.

The Arrival
The port
The old port and the summer ferries are a scrum. Flying in is easier; if you sail, know what you're arriving into and arrange the transfer up the cliff.
