The Autumn Issue

Southern autumn: gold in the valleys, quiet on the lakes.

On the cover — Queenstown  ·  Otago · New Zealand
From the editors

March is autumn in the southern hemisphere, and few places wear it better than the country around Queenstown. The old gold-mining town of Arrowtown turns properly gold; the lakes go still; the summer adventure crowds thin out. This issue is about timing a trip to that short, beautiful window.

Queenstown itself is compact and busy; the best stays are often just outside it, on the lake or up the valley toward Glenorchy, where the road runs out and the scenery takes over.

The contents

  1. On the cover

    Queenstown

The full Queenstown guide is in production and joins this issue shortly.

  2. The Room

    Town or lodge

Central Queenstown is walkable and lively; the lake lodges a few minutes out — Matakauri among them — trade the buzz for water, mountains and silence.

  3. The Detour

    To Glenorchy

The 45-minute drive along Lake Wakatipu to Glenorchy and Paradise is one of the great short drives, and the gateway to the big walks.

  4. The Table

    Gibbston wine

The Gibbston valley, in the gorge east of town, makes serious Pinot Noir and lays on the long cellar-door lunches to match.
