The Island-Interior Issue

Green in the middle, surf at the edges — match the base to the trip.

From the editors

Bali is not one holiday but several, and picking the wrong base is the classic mistake. June opens the dry season, and this issue is about matching the island to what you actually want: the green calm of Ubud in the interior, the surf and cliffs of the Bukit in the south, or the cafés and beach clubs of Canggu.

Trying to do all of them from one hotel means a lot of time in traffic. We'd rather you chose well and stayed put — or split the trip on purpose.

The contents

  1. On the cover

Where to Stay in Bali: Best Areas, Villas, and When to Go

A practical guide to choosing where to base in Bali — Seminyak, Canggu, Ubud, the Bukit, Sanur, or the resort south — plus private pool villas, when to go around the dry season and Nyepi, the temples, and the Nusa islands.

  2. The Room

    Interior or coast

Ubud's rice-terrace villas are for green and quiet; the Bukit peninsula is for cliffs and surf; Canggu is for cafés and a younger crowd. They are genuinely different trips.

  3. The Detour

    East to Sidemen

When Ubud feels busy, the Sidemen valley to the east offers the same terraced green with a fraction of the traffic, under the volcano.

  4. The Table

    Warung to cliff

Eat cheaply and well at the family warungs; save one night for the cliff-edge restaurants of the south, which sell the view as much as the food.
