Maldives Meals and Board Basis

A single fact shapes every choice in the Maldives: one island, one resort. Book an island and you commit to it entirely, for its restaurants and its price of a coffee. There is no village to wander to, no second beach down the road. This makes the board basis a more significant decision than at a city hotel, because on a private island, you cannot simply walk out to a cheaper restaurant. The gap between room-only and full-board can dwarf the room rate itself, and ignoring it can lead to unexpected costs.

The headline choice on a resort island is often the villa type, which is the biggest lever on price after the resort itself. An overwater villa, with its steps into the lagoon, is the one people picture, and it is usually the most expensive category. However, the second lever, the board basis, matters more here. Bed-and-breakfast means lunch and dinner are bought daily on the island. Half board adds dinner, while all-inclusive covers meals and typically a set list of drinks. Given the lack of alternatives, half board or all-inclusive can save real money, though drinks can still add up quickly.

On an inhabited local island, the dining rhythm is different. Here, you are in a real Maldivian town, eating at local cafes and sharing the island with residents. This offers a much cheaper way to visit, with food costs a fraction of a resort’s. The trade-offs are real: modest dress in public, a dry island with no alcohol beyond a bar boat offshore or a resort day trip, and a lively local beach rather than a private lagoon. Maafushi, in South Malé Atoll, is a well-known guesthouse island about half an hour from the airport by speedboat, offering dozens of guesthouses and dive shops.

When planning, work out the true nightly cost with food and transfer included, not just the room rate. The transfer itself is not a footnote; it can cost as much as a night on the island. For mid-distance atolls like much of Ari and Baa, seaplanes are common, but they fly only in daylight. If your flight lands in the evening and your resort is a seaplane island, you will not fly out until the next morning, potentially adding an unplanned night near Velana International Airport in Hulhumalé. Speedboats and domestic flights, by contrast, run later into the evening or around the clock, avoiding this issue. Always confirm the transfer type and its cost when booking.
